Continuing her push for a comprehensive energy plan that includes increased oil drilling, Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., reminded Americans that the Democrats message to save the planet doesn’t add up. The world has been saved already, she says.
Responding to Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s comment about creating an energy policy to help save the planet, Bachmann added religion to the energy crisis during her interview with OneNewsNow, a Web site run by Christian American Family News Network.
“[Pelosi] is committed to her global warming fanaticism to the point where she has said that she’s just trying to save the planet,” Bachmann said. “We all know that someone did that over 2,000 years ago, they saved the planet — we didn’t need Nancy Pelosi to do that.”
Bachmann said Democratic leaders are committed to stopping bills that allow drilling. Bachmann plans to join other Republicans in the House chamber on Friday to continue their protest during the congressional recess to bring members back for a vote on an energy bill.
The Minnesota DFL released a statement Tuesday denouncing the protest at the Capitol, calling it an “Olympics of meaningless rhetoric.
According to the statement, Republicans “would rather grandstand in a meaningless charade in Washington that will do nothing to reduce the cost of gas or the overall economic squeeze on Minnesota’s working families.”
Bachmann’s recent comments are reminiscent of her earlier religious comments in 2006 at the Living Word Church in Brooklyn Park when she said she was “hot” for Jesus.
“What does God say when he looks at you or looks at me? He wants to say, ‘she’s hot, he’s hot,’ because we are hot for him on the inside,” Bachmann said. “When you are hot for Jesus Christ, nothing is like that life.”
I think Michelle needs to be reminded of the “seperation of church and state”. She can be “hot” for Jesus but leave it out of politics or let’s start taxing the churches! She has got to go!
I do not understand why the Democrats are unable to produce a satisfactory candidate to run against her. This should be a lay-up for them, and they somehow turn it into a f*ck-up instead. How embarrassing.

Jim, I’m a Christian and I find her comments offensive. In fact, it reminds me of the philosophy of Reagans interior secretary James Watt, who felt we should use up all our resources because Jesus was coming soon, and we won’t be needing them anyway.
There was a guy at my sister’s church who read some book by a Christian scholar which claimed He would return on October 29, 1988. This guy was so convinced, he went out and bought a brand new Cadillac three weeks before the big day. Needless to say, he learned a valuable lesson.
The bible says be in the world but not of it — to me, that means that Christians should focus on important things, like helping the poor and promoting peace throughout the world, much like Pope John Paul II did. Politics is fithy-even more so when compared to Christ’s love, and Bachmann is sullying his name by cheaply using in politics. Not only that, it distracts from the real message of our faith, confusing people with an incorrect impression of our faith.

I was going to say that to me, a “race” implies some sort of actual fair competition. For some reason, the Democrats are far less concerned with finding a solid candidate to run in that district, than they are with belly-aching about Bachmann serving. Even those who support Bachmann would probably agree with that. Want her out? Then produce an electable candidate to replace her.
When forced to choose between “my” unqualified candidate versus “your” unqualified candidate, common sense should tell you that most folks will simply choose “their” unqualified candidate. If the desire is truely there to tip the scales, secure a moderate candidate whos views reflect mainstream people and win the race on the strength of the independant vote, as well as those who don’t hesitate to vote across party lines for the right candidate. Think Colin Peterson, Jim Ramstad, and I would say we will be able to add Dick Day to that list shortly.
Neither party seems to have the spine to endorse someone like that because they may break ranks across party lines to vote for legislation that actually makes sense to pass. Heaven forbid!!! Thus, we get stuck with ‘representation’ from the likes of Bachmann and Ellison.

I’m not sure if she was invited (see OT’s comment above), but she’d be wise to take a pass on that event anyway. She doesn’t know squat about agriculture or the issues facing MN farmers and/or industry. She has more to lose by showcasing her lack of knowledge in that field than by not showing up to participate. Along those lines, I don’t think Franken did himself any favors by showing up there with nearly zero working knowledge of agriculture either. The “Norm Coleman is the same as George Bush who is the same as the devil” thing can only be repeated so many times before the crowd expects you to come up with some new material.
Of course, coming up with new material has never been a strong suit for Franken in this career endeavor, or his previous ones.

Why is it that republican means christian these days? Please don’t confuse the two. So, I’ll be honest, I haven’t even heard of Bachmann, but agruing that global warming isn’t a problem because Jesus already saved the planet isn’t really an intelligent debate that we should encourage. Yes politicians DO have the right to express their opinions, but nonsensical opinions lead to disillusionment with the political party they are affiliated with.
That doesn’t make Pelosi right in her statements that she wants to save the planet. I would suggest that if we republicans want to gain more credibilty we should try (at least in the public spotlight) to make arguments based more on science and less on religion. For instance, she could have raised doubts about Pelosi’s statement far more convincingly had she talked about global climate change cycles or solar flares. I’m all for keeping your religious beliefs and believing in whatever it is you want to, but speaking out publically and saying “Jesus already saved the planet” or “I’m hot for jesus” basically alienates people who don’t hold those beliefs and further creates a bipartisan country that is divided.

What the founding fathers did not want was a “national” religion ala Great Britain at the time. Why do you think they opened sessions of Congress with a prayer? Why is “In God We Trust” on our currency?

I was not homeschooled, but I can think for myself and although Thomas Jefferson had slightly differing views than the majority of the founding fathers, he too used prayer and references to God in his writings and speeches.

Yet by showing a preference towards one religion (i.e. Christianity), the government effectively fails to provide equal protection to citizens of different religions, or even those who choose not to have a religion.
Anyway, you express your concern about this and that’s cool…So it sounds like you’re going to be voting for Obama? He’s promising to extend Bush’s faith-based initiatives if he’s elected.

I agree of equal protection but it does not state that in government proceedings, buildings, schools etc that religion must be left out - regardless of the faith. I am all for having a moment of silence everyday or call it individual prayer time in schools. I am a Libertarian and will be voting for Bob Barr. I want the government out of my life and give me back my God given rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; unencumbered by the overbearing, big-brother federal government.
I agree with the founding fathers in not allowing the women to vote. Studies have shown women vote with their emotions and not with logic. I know that will upset a great many, but if you look at history, the US started becoming a nanny state once women were afforded that right. With regard to “exact wording” - show me where the Constitution says I can’t pirate DVDs, or buy and sell illegal drugs, or that it’s illegal to destroy government property. It’s not there explicitly, BigB, it’s implied by other articles and amendments. Yet those things are certainly illegal.
I can pray and believe in God too, but I work for a company who has responsibilities to lots of people of all faiths. So when I’m at work, I follow their rules and let my personal faith remain personal.
Same goes for government — it has responsibilites to protect the rights of people of all faiths, so the beliefs of an individual faith don’t belong there…even if the guiding principles of the government are based on them.
Let me put it to you another way. Suppose in 50 years there are more Muslims in Minnesota than Christians. Would you object if they passed a law requiring all children to say, “Allahu Akbar!” before starting their school day? It sounds ridiculous to us, but that’s what it’s like for non-Christian citizens who live here now.

You have strayed a long way from the separation of church and state debate. Equal protection is a good thing. Pirating copyrighted or patented materials is against the LAW but was not part of the Constitution. A HUGE difference. The Constitution is the framework for the laws, the boundaries per se. Laws which make those things illegal, are written and passed by legislative bodies and signed by the executive branch of that level of government.
The law you hypothesize would be struck down as unconstitutional due to the First Amendment.
Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
By forcing everyone to say that, it would be establishing Islam as the state religion. Until that amendment was removed by the constitutional process, that law would never see the light of day.
Finally, your premise about comparing society and government to your workplace is also misguided. The workplace belongs to your employer, the government and all its offices, schools and functions belong to the citizens of this country. As a private citizen, your employer can have more restictive or less restrictive policies to govern your behavior. That job you go to everyday belongs to your employer and not to you so it is good you respect the wishes of the company.

I’d love to disagree with that, Big B but I cannot. Unfortunately, that is often the case, especially with the more vocal opposition you run into. I would suggest to you however, that this vocal group tends to be the minority. I’m of the opinion that most people let a passing mention of God (whichever one you wish to pick) go in one ear and out the other with little notice.
It is when people don’t simply mention God, but choose to forge a platform from which to cram their version of God down anyone’s throat that is within earshot that you start to encounter a backlash from the group of folks that include guys like me.

I am for school vouchers so if you want to send your child to a religious school of your choice then so be it. Free market will weed out the unsuccessful schools. (I am fully prepared for that backlash on this one too!)

When I was in college, the kids coming out of private schools seemed to struggle to maneuver through the real world as well as those of us savages that the public school system cranked out. I am of the belief that public school forces kids to learn how to pee standing up. If you want to send your kid to a special school, it should be on your dime. No different than hockey camp.

Look at all the non-religious private colleges and universitys. The ones that provide the best education are the ones everyone wants to get into and survive. The others just fade out of existance.
If vouchers were a reality, I would be one of the first to open a school and run it as a business. Pay for performance and recruit the best staff. Make a little money along the way. That my friend is the American way.

Well, Pelosi is quite clear that it’s the energy policy (to be voted on by many reps) that will save the planet, not any particular person—it’s only the Christian religious folk (like Darlin’ Michele) who think that some individual god/man has “saved” the planet, and that nothing need be done after him…..Pelosi isn’t saying she’s “saving the planet”, slobbering Jim.
Second, the planet’s climate is on the absolute edge of the irreversible tipping point, according to the climate expert that has run NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies for 20 years, James Hansen.
Unless a very serious attempt to cut back on our CO2 emissions is enacted in the term of the next president, then the planet’s climate will pass the tipping point, and the average surface temperature will be certain to increase to such a degree that we will essentially have “an entirely different planet”, in his words.

Rather, it is taken out of a letter written in 1802 (15 years after the Constitution was written) from Thomas Jefferson to the Danbury (Connecticut) Baptists. Nor has he ever been able to understand that each separate action or statement by government officials can be evaluated on its own for accuracy and legality.
But he never really did grow up and was likely given special grades by teacher relatives when painfully laboring away in school, so these areas of blind ignorance have always been indulged.
Nor does he understand that Repubs WERE solely in charge of the “budget fraud” until 2006, increasing the national debt by over $3 trillion before the Dems took control of Congress in early 2007. Since that time, the usual problem of ineffective divided government, with Bush vetoing Dem budgets and proposed spending, while demanding his massive military spending, has continued the problem.
As for the mortgage bailout, the Repubs ran the show utterly while that catastrophe of Repub regulation failure grew into the present tsunami, and the limited response so far has been bipartisan and led largely by Bush’s Repub Wall Street Treasury Secretary and Repub Fed Chief. So Repubs were “in charge” of these disasters, especially Repub Bernanke—appointed by Bushco.
Doing nothing in the face of financial meltdown was the action “taken” (so to speak) by conservative Repubs in the early years of the Great Depression, and most economists today think that was a big mistake. Hence the limited bipartisan Housing Bailout Bill that was recently passed, largely at the behest of the nation’s bankers, who got us into this mess.
The ongoing federal budget disaster is going to get much larger before it gets better, now that we have been dragged into a massive recession by reckless conservative Repubs—the party that wrecked the country. Years of tax cuts everywhere, spending boondoogles for all, especially militarists, and 6DJ thinks Repubs are the ones to turn to fix their mess–that’s cretinous.
We’ll have to raise taxes on the wealthy (like 6DJ) and attempt to make cuts where we can, while using infrastructure building and government spending to try to get the economy moving again. It will be very, very difficult as a result of the huge levels of US personal debt, high crude oil prices (which are certainly here to stay) and the high level of national debt caused by crazed Repub militarism and tax cuts of the past 8 years.
The obvious thing to do is raise taxes on the rich and corporations and make massive cuts in worthless military spending, while diverting spending to domestic infrastructure projects. But America’s beloved militarism probably means something that sensible is impossible.

Try reading the Constitution and Amendments for a change instead of spouting the same misrepresented junk so many other liberals spout off. The actual relevant text ACTUALLY reads:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof
Rep. Bachmann was not establishing religion. She was stating her viewpoint based on her personal religious faith and her God-granted and United States supported free exercise thereof.
Does it makes sense to mingle religion and politics? How can you not? Our morals and viewpoints are formed largely as part of our faith - even if it is an atheistic and humanistic faith. You’ve gotta have faith there IS no God to reject Christ after all, just as you have to have faith there IS a God to accept Him.
So, yeah, like some here intimated, a worldview is in essence a religion if that takes the place of a religious faith.
Since a leader’s faith will (or at least should) guide their morals and voting practices, then it is absolutely correct to allow that in the political sphere - all attempts to the contrary are simply an attempt to squash one view in favor of another which in my mind IS establishment of religion and/or denial of free exercise of one’s own.

The principle is separation of RELIGION and state, although it is usually misapplied!
All people have religions, it is a simple fact of life. Although there are many who claim the exclusive right to determine which religions qualify as “church” in “separation of CHURCH and state” and which do not, namely their own religions, I.E. environmentalism, homosexuality, evolutionism/darwinism, feminism, secular humanism, abortionism, liberalism, etc.

Yes, “Gabholli,” the idea that our Founders wished to exclude God from the public square is quite preposterous. The quotations from George Washington represent just the tip of the iceberg in regard to the writings/actions that could be enumerated. For example, the first act of the first Congress in 1774 was a request for a minister to begin the session with prayer and also to lead the Congressmen in the reading of 4 chapters from the Bible. In 1782, Congress approved the printing of the first English language Bible to be printed in America. A Congressional endorsement was placed inside the new volume. During the Constitutional Convention itself (1787), Benjamin Franklin stated, “God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid?. . .Without His concurring aid, we shall succeed in this political building no better than the builders of Babel.”
Then, in 1789, on the very day that the First Amendment was drafted, the Congress asked President Washington to declare a “day of public thanksgiving and prayer,” which he did, stating, “that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations, and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions. . .” One would have to assume that the Congress, not even one day removed from the drafting of the First Amendment, would clearly and unquestionably know what the original intent behind the First Amendment was and would therefore also know that their request for a national day of prayer was wholly appropriate and consistent with it.

My guess is still Kathleen Sebelius for Obama’s VP choice. She is a rising star just like he is. Although a guy like Dodd may be a solid choice, I suspect Obama will want to stick with his mantra of ‘change’ and Dodd would be viewed as too much of an ‘existing establishment’ guy to fit. Just my opinion. This ticket will prioritize charisma and be geared toward youth as much as possible because that is the segment he is counting on.

With respect to “separation of church and state” the Founders only put prohibitions on the national government establishing a state religion.
In no way did the Constitution put any restricitons on the individual states in establishing state religions. In fact, such outcomes were expected and several states did have established religions and tax payments were used to support churches and church schools.

And, that is the case. But the critical thing that you are now admitting to is that “separation” meant something completely different and that the Founders would never have agreed with the way it is interepted now. The Constitution clearly prohibits the establishment of a national church.
Incorporation of the 1st Amendment meant that states would also not be allowed to establish a religion at their political level.
However, this does not mean that a state must be intolerant of religion, including support of religious schools because these practices continued even after incorporations.

On “Established Church”
The founders were all too familiar with the practice of governments to elevate one particular denomination over another and to support it with taxpayer funds: just such arrangements prevailed in more than one of the colonies before and after the Constitution.
What they were concerned about was to eliminate the possibility that at some point one of these denominations would attempt to force ONE church as the “established” church over all thirteen colonies, to the detriment of the others.
Freedom OF religion was the point, not freedom FROM religion as it is so often preached today by those who would remove all references to faith from our public life and discourse.
It was a wise choice, then as now. But the current vogue of advocates of the “Post Christian Era” is a travesty of the traditions which gave birth to the whole American experiment. Without those deeply embedded Christian ethical and cultural values our form of government does not make sense.
It is all too human to throw out the baby with the bath.
But the fact is that Christian values are the bedrock of our Constitution.
As our culture abandons them, Christians of all faiths lament the lawless society we are becoming, where even murderers face only a slap on the hand.
Sexual promiscuity is reminiscent of pagan times.
Dishonesty is seen as just “the way to get along, so long as you don’t get caught.”
Respect for the property of others seems nonexistent as theft and vandalism become commonplace.
Brutality is countenanced by our society and the courts.
And the most destructive of societal behaviors become only the “crime du jour.”
If anyone protests these things in the name of religion, they are denounced as trying to inject religion into the public sphere. In other words, it is fine to hold one’s beliefs, but not to speak them outside the walls of one’s church.
And THAT is the egregious violation of the first amendment no-one wants to talk about, because it in effect “establishes” the views of agnostics and atheists as the “official” religion of the country.
Bottom line, let the Christians voice their views on the streets, in the airways, in the public halls and legislatures as having equal standing with those who oppose them. Let Freedom Ring Througout the Land!

Are you talking about Old Testament law or New Testament law? Christians can’t answer those questions because they aren’t convenient to todays evangelical movement, which is less about Christ and more about power and influence in the political spheres. Lambert (2003) has examined the religious affiliations and beliefs of the Founders. Some of the 1787 delegates had no affiliation. The others were Protestants except for three Roman Catholics: C. Carroll, D. Carroll, and Fitzsimons. Among the Protestants delegates to the Constitutional Convention, 28 were Episcopalian, eight were Presbyterians, seven were Congregationalists, two were Lutherans, two were Dutch Reformed, and two were Methodists. The total number being 49. Some of the more prominent Founding Fathers were anti-clerical or vocal about their opposition to organized religion, such as Jefferson. Some of them often related their anti-organized church leanings in their speeches and correspondence, including George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson (who created the “Jefferson Bible”), and Benjamin Franklin. However, notable founders, such as Patrick Henry, were strong proponents of traditional religion. Several of the Founding Fathers considered themselves to be deists or held beliefs very similar to that of deists, including Franklin, Jefferson, and Ethan Allen.[11]

In the New Testament there is internal evidence that parts of it have proceeded from an extraordinary man; and that other parts are of the fabric of very inferior minds. It is as easy to separate those parts, as to pick out diamonds from dunghills[citation needed] .” In yet another letter, to José Correia da Serra, dated April 11, 1820, Jefferson wrote that: “Priests…dread the advance of science as witches do the approach of daylight and scowl on the fatal harbinger announcing the subversions of the duperies on which they live[citation needed].”

Not all conservatives are “white males,” nor are they stupid, as you are implying here. Those are both misnomers. Rhetorical generalizations get you nowhere. ALL white males are believers in this “suspect” history? I’m dumbfounded. Please clarify further.
I would like to add that I a Christian, and am proud of my faith. I refuse to believe that I am what many people have branded as “stupid, superstitious, unintelligent, uninformed, and foolish.” I am sure that many people who say they are Christians in the public square are putting their lives on a limb in a certain sense. I find such action taken by a Christian no different than offering an olive branch to hungry and ferocious wolves.

The Left believes that whatever a judge feels is best is law. Of course, they only believe this because the judges on their side are very active in pressing these matters and it is one of the few ways they can advance their adgendas.
However, in the not so distant past it was the “conservative” courts that made rule of law based upon substantive due process. Using this as a legal basis is as wrong then as it is now.
THe fact is that sometimes bad law is created. Justice Thomas, the “darling” of the Left, said it the most perfect in his dissent on the Texas sodomy law case. Thomas stated that if he were a member of the Texas legislature he would never vote for such a statute but there is nothing in the Consitution that prohibits a state from such a statute.

That is an extremely good question, Richard.
The Preamble of the Constitution says that we wish to “secure the Blessings of Liberty,” a concept which is biblical. Galatians 5:13 (in the New Testament) says, “For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.” The founders knew that liberty is from the hand of God (He has “called” His people to it), therefore, tyrants do not have the right to revoke or abolish liberty. A portion of Leviticus 25:10 (in the Old Testament) is even inscribed on the Liberty Bell: “Proclaim liberty throughout all the land to all its inhabitants.”
The Constitution sets up 3 branches of government, each with distinct roles. These roles can be found in a portion of Isaiah 33:22 (in the Old Testament) where they are listed as titles of God: “For the Lord is our Judge, the Lord is our Lawgiver, the Lord is our King.” Notice:
Judge (the Judicial Branch)
Lawgiver (the Legislative Branch)
King (the Executive Branch).
The founders knew that all of these are roles that need to be fulfilled by an effective government so they provided for each. However, they did not assign all three roles to one individual, or even to one branch, because they recognized what Jeremiah 17:9 (in the Old Testament) says, that “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?” Instead, they established a system of checks and balances. As we can see in many countries throughout history and even today (Venezuela–Hugo Chavez, Germany–Hitler, Cambodia–Pol Pot, Uganda–Idi Amin, Russia–Stalin), when one individual has too much unchecked power it can quickly lead to despotism and tyranny. They recognized that God is quite able to faithfully administer all these roles, but sinful man cannot.
I’m glad you posed that question, Richard, because I’m enjoying locating some of the Biblical references whose principles comprise the foundation of our Constitution. I plan to look up some more, but it’s rather late right now. Good night!
