This Anoka County voter was clearly ready for the end of campaign season. This ballot has an almost poetic quality.

In case you have trouble reading it, the poem goes like this, all entered as write-in candidates:
You need to
make voting
easier to do
This is
ridiculous
Enough with the
political ads
This is
what happens
when you
bombard me
with them
Al Franken and
Norm Coleman
are so annoying
they’re repugnant
From now on
I’ll give up
my right
to vote
if I get
beat down with
political ads
Advertise that
Minnesota
I’d
rather
have
Nick
DiPalo
for
President
Ha
Ha
Ha
Ha
Ha
I’m sorry, but what a stupid thing to do. This is not something to be celebrated.
There’s no way this guy (or woman) could have known that any human would look at his ballot — so why waste people’s time and money? If you’re going to go down to the polling place and wait in line, at least give a sh1t enough about the issues to cast an actual vote.
Far better to vote for a spoiler than to deliberately spoil a ballot, although to have a selectable space specifying NO VOTE would make sense in the present recount situation.
Is either campaign contesting this ballot…maybe on grounds that its from a district that leans Republican?
I agree Sarge.
Since Al Franken is the first candidate’s name mentioned, I’d say voter intent is clear. Challenge the ballot and have it counted
!
Funny on the surface. But I fear we’re now going to see a lot more of this in future elections - thanks to the media coverage these jokers will expect.
Well, this person’s protest succeeded beyond his wildest dreams! Although it really should not have, since humans don’t usually even look at the average ballot and the scanning machine can’t “read”…..oh, the vagaries of the universe.
I wonder how long it took “him” to “create” his protest ballot, and whether he knew what he was going to say as he headed into the polls?
Is he protesting the length (and complexity?) of the ballot or the ads? Or that he had to show up at a polling place at all? “You need to make voting easier to do”…..
It’s also unclear why he hates ALL political ads so much, and he seems to have tarred all the races with the “negative” Coleman/Franken brush.
Many people I’ve talked to complain bitterly of the “negative” tone of the Coleman/Franken race, but they can’t seem to see the crucial distinction: Franken’s “negativity” was based on his belittling and exposing Coleman’s support for Bushco and failed “conservative” policies, i.e. Coleman’s actual record of “accomplishment”. Surely this is fair game; if not, what’s the race to be about?
With Coleman on the other hand, the lion’s share of Coleman’s negativity was simple mindless personal smears and character attacks. “Franken isn’t FIT!! Not morally FIT!!” etc, etc., based on jokes dreamed up for SNL or magazines. This was false, baseless, anti-intellectual and anti-imaginative nonsense, and it was indeed quite repugnant, as this voter says.
It seems to me this guy couldn’t see the difference, and he also didn’t see fit to reward the most “positive” campaign in 30 years, Obama’s. So he wasn’t thinking too clearly as he applied his “principles”. Why punish “good” candidates for the excesses of Coleman/Franken, Mr. Voter?
It may also be he simply hates to see ANY political ads on his TV. If that’s the case, he’s a crank and actually hates the First Amendment, which guarantees political speech. He should turn off his TV during election season, read the newspaper and vote. That’s my advice to this new MN celeb. Will he now reveal himself?
You know, I had wondered about your claimed “conservatism”, SgtP, but your condemnation of this guy’s small and imaginative protest convinces me that you are indeed someone with a “conservative” mind. Nothing much was “wasted”, except his vote. Nobody was hurt. It should give you pause that our resident authoritarian 2D agrees with you completely.
Cranks and eccentics like this person are what make us a great country. We used to have more of them. There’s a lot to be said for marching to a different drummer.
It seems to me that a good part of this voter’s frustration related to the interminable list of candidates, many of whom were unopposed. A number of voters at our precinct asked the judges if they HAD to vote for all those judges (to have their ballot count). The answer, of course, was “No, except for the constitutional amendments and school board requests for money where a blank equals a “No” vote”. For those who did not know this, all those names they did not know were frustrating.
And Parthian, for the majority of voters for whom all left/right originating ads are good and all opposing ads are bad, ALL the negative ads were annoying at best, and well sufficient to cause a negative reaction such as this voter’s. Voters can usually spot a half-truth or outright lie when they see one.
My mother used to say “If you can’t say something good about someone, don’t say anthing at all.”
It seems to me this might be an excellent moral compass for future campaign advertising.
It wouldn’t stop the pervasive half-truths when politicians beat their own drums, but at least it might leave viewers with less anger. (Braggarts are not so hated as mudslingers.)
John Ianoco, I like your style, especially the “if you can’t say something good..”, which my mother told me, too.
However, I’ve been inside many political campaigns and know it’s generally true that if one candidate goes low, the other cannot afford to unilaterally disarm. In other words, negative campaigns work, and fire is fought with fire but, if an opponent keeps to the high road, one can maintain a positive tone to one’s own campaign and still win.
I have therefore adopted a strategy of voting against the first individual to go negative - and by negative I mean personal or irrelevant attacks or dishonesty, not merely criticism of the other guy’s record. It’s usually obvious who first jumped into the gutter.
This year, I voted for candidates of both parties for various offices. In the US Senate race, remembering who went negative first was an easy choice (think “bowling”) and so was my vote.
I was on the same flight Thursday as Senator Coleman from DC. I was impressed at what a great American he was. Unfortunately for me, there were a lot of people who wanted to shake his hands and a number of ladies who gave him a hug. And he flew coach! Every time a dem politician is on my flight, they are in first class. It says something about our Senator Coleman.
God bless you Norm!
Parthian, not sure if you noticed, but the one thing the guy DID vote on was NO on the constitutional amendment.
Voting is one of the most patriotic thing a person can do. Our friend above essentially won the lottery by having his ballot featured here - there’s no way he could have known that anyone would have looked at it — certainly there are many many other imaginitive ways to protest whatever issue he’s protesting, rather than wasting a ballot in this way. It makes me angry that someone p1ssed away their vote for something (which, if not for the unusual statewide recount) which never should have been seen.
Jon E Lacono, you make some very good points, especially about the long list of judges, etc. running unopposed. Although risking writers cramp I take the time to fill in the circle next to all the incumbents. Why? To offset a write-in campaign by some unknown’s friends counting on a majority of non-votes. In that sense, yes I’m conservative.
It’s our duty to have an opinion going to the polls, but a good default opinion is that if a judge needed removal from office you’d have heard about it. And if the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t, voting for someone just because you like their surname would be an even worse idea than not voting at all.
Re. a moratorium on trash talking campaign adds, your observation “It wouldn’t stop the pervasive half-truths when politicians beat their own drums, but at least it might leave viewers with less anger. (Braggarts are not so hated as mudslingers.)”
If only mudslingers weren’t more popular than braggarts, but ridiculers like Limbaugh and even Lou Dobbs seem to have higher approval ratings than our very unpopular president. When W’s not bragging about his own humility but actually appears humbled, look out! He’s then in the doing mode. Chances are he’s passing as many midnight executive orders as possible to thwart the next administration’s agenda. And he’ll beg nobody’s pardon. To say “pardon me” would just be bragging again.
CNC’s definintion of a great American: someone who flies coach.
Do you travel much CNC? No? Norm travels quite a bit - round trip between DC and MN at least several times per month. That would qualify him as “elite” status pretty quickly, which means he’d get automatic upgrades to first class.
So perhaps he flew coach is because he wanted to be noticed flying coach.
D2, Do you agree with CNC that Norm’s a fellow traveler?
D2, Do you agree with CNC that Norm’s a fellow traveler?
“and I’m sure D2 appreciates the support.”
I don’t need any support. I think most people realize how corrupt the democrat voter fraud group ACORN is. I don’t understand why you and TrueBlew can’t accept this though.
Thanks Cash!
I’m happy to see that Norm travels coach unlike liberal big headed San Fran Nancy Pelosi who has demanded access to an AIR FORCE ONE type government funded private jet so she can fly around as she pleases without being inconvenienced.
I thought she bought into Algore’s “Global Warming” hoax? I guess that only applies to other people’s fuel consumption habits.
Preacher Cash wasn’t able to shake the Great American’s hand and slobber all over him, it sounds like, but maybe he was able to dash into the head after the great senator’s “visit” and catch the heady aroma!
“The ladies hugged Senator Norm! And he flew coach! Can you beat that? What a Great American!” Pretty funny stuff, Cash—thanks for the info. Hopefully you’ll being running into Senator Franken on future DC treks…..
SgtP, I did indeed miss that the protester voted NO on the amendment. He is not a man of principle, after all. You’ve got a sharp eye, are you helping out on the recount?
LOL no Parth. Those poor recounters — having to put up with all the gamesmanship from both sides. That’d suck.
I just heard the ABC has just started banning it’s reporters from wearing American flag lapel pins. Who says the media is liberal? It looks like Obama and his refusal to wear the pin started a trend with the leftists.
sarge - Since you are worried about my flying status, I was in first class. So And yes partisan, to fulfill your demented mind, I did rush to the restroom after the plane landed. I had to get rid of all of those free drinks eventually! I didn’t see Norm after the plane landed. There were probably too many admirers delaying him from deboarding.
If was funny listening to the folks sitting at the gate talking about Norm and about Angry Al.
I have sat next to quite a few libs in my flying days. Mondale was the biggest idiot. He couldn’t even figure out how to open the restroom door on the plane.
God bless you Norm!
Good lord DTSI-bot, it’s taken you 7 years to hear that? Read this from snopes.com: http://tinyurl.com/6gt99h
Who is pushing this as something new? And when you read snopes you’ll see they backed off. You may not have liked their reasoning but it wasn’t a frivolous decision on their part.
And Obama has not refused to wear the pin. Didn’t you see him wearing it during the debates? In fact, he was wearing it and McCain wasn’t.
What a dupe you are.
Obama doesn’t hold his hand over his heart during the pledge of allegiance either.
Okay so I think I got it figured out now: If a politician can’t open the door to the restroom on a plane, he’s an idiot.
But if he flies coach, wears an American flag pin and puts his hand over his heart during the pledge of allegiance, he’s a Great American.
All those years of carefully considering issues was wasted - I could have just followed this simple guideline!
Can someone please find me a photo of Ronald Reagan wearing an American flag lapel pin?
I’m unable to find one.
“Can someone please find me a photo of Ronald Reagan wearing an American flag lapel pin?”
They weren’t invented yet. Otherwise he would have worn one I’m sure.
Ahhhh..really? The flag pin wasn’t invented in the 1980s. Fascinating.
That’s funny because the Soviets had one going back to the 50s. And they got the idea from the Nazis.
DTSI-bot, snopes debunked that pledge of allegiance one a long time ago and even has pictures of him with his hand over his heart during the pledge.
Are you really in that deep of denial that you can’t seem to let go of the lies? Do you still believe that lie about Obama’s birth certificate too? Of course you do.
You’re a lost cause DTSI-bot.
No Dora - it’s a simple line of code in his programming that looks like this:
var PatriotFlag
if Patriot then PatriotFlag = 1
if Commun1stLib then PatriotFlag = 0
end
Dora,
One thing you can’t dispute is that Obama will be the most radical leftist President America has ever has, God help us.
What’s he going to do DTSI-bot that will make him the “most radical leftist”?
SgtP, I think a few lines of his code are missing.
Here’s your “radical leftist” DTSI-bot.
2D, I think you need to shift immediately into full scale survivalist mode in order to weather the coming hurricane of Obama soc*al*st-communist-radicalist-ism. Your very existence is at stake!
First, quit your job, being employed is how the crazed demonic soc*alists plan on “controlling” people. Next, reduce all your assets to cash—they can’t trace that! Bury it in your back yard–maybe in the compost pile.
Next, it goes without saying that you need the highest level of firepower you can find, search the web for international arms dealers, they’ll help you to get what you need. Just give ‘em your visa number and they’ll do the rest!
Stop all your mail, and board up the house–no visitors, especially mailmen, they are the weak link to every survival plan! Get an excavating company in to dig another basement under your existing one—but mum’s the word! You MUST have a false ceiling above the new subterranean living quarters–read “The Diary of Anne Frank” if you are uncertain how to proceed…..it’s at your local library, but make sure to check it out under a false name. Maybe send one of your kids to check it out…
Set up monthly automatic deliveries of food, like from Omaha Steaks or The Cheeseball Factory, do you get those catalogues? They will just keep sending food to your address, no questions asked, you never need to leave the house and take the risk of being spotted by the Obama Soci*list Attitude Squads ™.
Then, when you’ve accomplished all this, gather the entire family up (don’t forget your dog Ronnie! and your flag pins!) and vanish into the hidden basement. You can risk a few “appearances” each month to get the frozen steaks and fritos that are delivered. Watch Fox News 24/7 just like you do now. In fact, your life really won’t change that much, certainly not your intellectual life (to call it that).
Oops, almost forgot: Pray every waking moment that you are not watching Fox. Close your eyes really tight–very important!
And viola, before you know it the 8 years of radicalist Obama soci*lism will be over, and you and the family can return to a functioning, sensibly governed country, which you and the other “conservatives” can promptly begin to destroy all over again!
No need to thank me for the advice, now get crackin’!
sarge - The difference between patriots and others is the respect we have for our government officials. I may disagree with our next president on his policies but I respect that he soon will be my president too. Patriots have more class than the libs since we will grant the other side that respect.
God bless you Norm!
So when can we expect the “God Bless you Barack!” invocation, “Patriot” Cash?
Well CNC, I commend you for that attitude - I know too many conservatives who are saying now, “He’s not MY president”
But - I hope you’re okay with him when he starts letting gay Muslim terrorists get married and adopt soc1a1ist children.
Yes, let’s all laugh it up now that Robert Rubin’s Citigroup is part of the TARP fiasco.
Wow, did he do a great job, or what?
I find it simply amazing that people will still defend “their party,” as this economy melts down before our eyes.
This is a bipartisan boondoggle of truly epic proportions, and Obama will be my President. Yep, he’s my man.
And as with W being held to scrutiny on his administration’s “job creation”, ie he was almost the first President since Hoover to have no net jobs during his first term, we can all closely track our President Obama’s job creation.
Can’t hide behind the recession excuse, can he? They didnt allow that for Bush.
Yes, we can all cry together. But hey, they are propping up Rubin’s stock options so good for him……..how’s your 401k doing, or is it now a 201k?
Here we go again.
How convenient to forget that 9/11 caused economic upheaval just short of the latest crunch.
If Bush is responsible for the net jobs loss in his first term, may I assume those who accuse him are ready to accuse Obama of the same as he enters his first term?
If so, I pity Obama.
I live in hopes that SOMEDAY people will realize that “the economy” is not something in the control of the politicians or any other single group at any given time. While they do not deserve credit for good times, neither do they deserve blame for hard times.
No amount of government intrusion brought us out of the great depression: only the huge spending for armaments did it, a factor beyond political control once war was declared. I remember. I was there. It will not bring us out now. It will leave us with increased national debt, as did the war.
To dems and repubs alike, my advice is to get some perspective, remember that the rain is followed by the sun, and that all the economists are just replaying the previous wars.
“The economy” is the sum total of millions of individual decisions, from all kinds of motivations too numerous to list, and it will turn around when enough of us have decided that we just have to move on regardless of conditions, and decide to stop hoarding our money and “go for it.”
And the country, like each individual, goes through cycles of confidence, overconfidence, anxiety, fear, panic (sometimes), and sometimes despair. And then the cycle repeats.
For myself, I like to remember the One who said of the sparrows: “not one of them falls to the ground but your Father in heaven knows it. How much more you…”
Everyone, including the BQ conserva-boys, better hope Obama is as good a president as FDR or they’ll be eating cat food in a few years.
Bailouts of abusive financial companies without accountability for the fraudsters who ran them and paid themselves massive bonuses is pretty hard to take. Plus, it takes money away from the huge fiscal stimulus package that we’ll need to get things moving again.
Bushco Repub economics: enable massive private gains for the rich, and then have the taxpaying schmoes “backstop” their massive losses. Privatize the gains, soci*lize the losses. Quite a system, but not exactly the “capitalist” one we were told to adore……
You’ve got your “history” of the Great Depression all wrong, John—tell us the actual economic historians you’ve read on the Depression that take this view.
And since you think only massive spending on “armaments” brought us out of the Depression, that’s just simple Keynesianism (which you are supposedly denying) and simply means that the fiscal package needs to be large enough. You’re a Keynesian without knowing it!
The idea that the people “think” themselves out of recessions/depressions by pulling themselves up by their bootstraps and that gub’mint(s) have no constructive role to play is such discredited “conservatism” that it might as well be out of the 17th century, when the causes of inflation were not understood.
Thankfully, your misguided “view” of economics won’t be present at a single meeting of officials involved with halting the crisis.
As to job losses, the point against Bush was the weakness of job creation during his wealthy tax cut “recovery”, which was simply a recovery of corporate profits. Obama won’t be “blamed” for job losses during the ongoing Repub Deregulation Recession, so get ready for more bitterness and conservative complaints against the “lib’rul media”….
John thanks for pointing out that the president is not the sole decider on the economy.
#1 is the Fed - so if you’re looking to blame one person, it’s Alan Greenspan…however in his defense, I’d say he was primarily trying to stop a recession from happening, so he cut rates, which drove the housing bubble.
A distant #2 is the federal goverment and executive brach — i.e. the US Treasury.
Close behind is #3 - congress, for passing budgets that drive the defeceit and debt.
Hee.
Not only did he vote against the amendment, Franken gets one vote for Asoc Judge 4, and Coleman one for Judge 16….
I assume they registered to have any write-ins for them counted eh.
It also means they both lost at least one race this November.
i liked this guys sentiments. I wish millions of Americans would have followed suit. The list of options available to represent us….laughable. Like government can do ANYTHING effectively. Let’s all shed a tear over how the government isn’t representing “me” properly.
Oh, and oops, Mr Obama has decided he’s not going to raise taxes on high income earners for a period. Welcome to the real world and economics 101, Mr. Obama. It’s a blessing he didn’t inherit a robust economy.
When do you think the government will tighten their belt? i vote never.
Parthian says:
“You’ve got your “history” of the Great Depression all wrong, John…”
But I had said:
“I remember. I was there.”
I do not subscribe to the Ministry of Truth (remember the book,”1984″?) revisionist views of that time by the ivory tower boys. I will choose to believe what my own lying eyes and ears told me.
As for being Keynesian or any other “ian”, in my opinion the “science” of economics is today about where the “science” of medicine was in the seventeenth century.
Give them another century or two, and I may pay more attention to what they have to say.
I have had to deal day by day with the operations of the economy for one business or another (where economic theory hits the ground) for many years, and I do not believe ANY of the “economists” have a good handle on it yet. Pretty much “Big hat, no cattle” so far.
And to the “That’s your opinion” folks I say “Yes it is, and pretty well grounded in years of experience. I do like to object when the crowd that was not there presumes to descibe the ball game, with views slanted by their own preconceptions.
I do believe the economists have caught on to one thing so far: that there is a relationship between supply and demand.
They don’t really understand what that relationship is, though. Too complicated, and too embedded in core human nature tendencies that are very complex.
It seems to me it OUGHT to be able to be analyzed and understood, but that has not yet happened. When it has happened, there will be a consensus and we will see no more prescriptions for bloodletting to resolve the fevers of the economy.
