NBC has removed a video of Al Franken from their Web site which showed the senator in a 1991 SNL skit lampooning the Senate Judiciary Committee. Franken, who currently serves on the Judiciary Committee, impersonated Senator Paul Simon questioning Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas. It appears to have been removed sometime this weekend, only days after it was first posted.
Network spokeswoman Sharon Pannozzo wrote in an e-mail that “no one is available to comment” on the removal of the video. Asked when someone would be available, she wrote, “We will not be commenting at all on this.”
The video is also unavailable at Hulu. A transcript can be found at The Huffington Post.
Maybe I’m going out on a limb here, but could it be that they pulled the video as a part of refreshing content?
Im sure their servers were jammed and this was house cleaning. The Franken part isnt even the funny part. The exchange between Carvey and Farley is the best part.
Speaking of Senator Al, he just voted with 57 other senators (mostly Dems but plenty of Repubs, too) to reject funding for more F-22 fighters than the Administration wanted, thus starting the long road to cutting our bloated “defense” budget.
Klobuchar also voted to cut this boondoggle “defense” funding, so Minnesota did more than its part.
Was never able to open that you tube link on the BQ thread. Must have been taken down a while ago.
Wasn’t you tube — it was NBC’s own video player. You accessing behind a firewall or something?
Whatever. Never saw it, but I may vaguely recall having seen it back in the day. Al’s entire opus Contributed to the notion he would be hard to beat for Senator later on. He was, but I guess I underestimated Norm.
I couldn’t get it to play, either. But what I did see was Senator Franken, (Yes Franken, Not Frakenberry) During the Sotormeyer Weiener hearings conduct himself surprising well. I am impressed. Good job Senator Franken.
He did a great impression of Sen Paul Simon in the 1991 clip.
He didn’t embarass himself, although I think he made too much of a big deal about how he wasn’t a lawyer.
What I find interesting in watching the house debate is…
Republicans seem to be concentrating on the cost while Democrats are bringing up the “Poor John and Jane†stories.
( By the way I miss the old nightly news John and Jane are eating dirt stories. They seem to end on January 21 )
Anyhow I wish we would base our politics on isolated incidences.
What are the %’s of people turned away for preexisting conditions ( and we should be working on changing that not government health care )
What are the %’s on some of people going into bankruptcies due to Health problems.
On all these issues we get blindside by the “Poor John and Jane†stories.
“On all these issues we get blindside by the “Poor John and Jane†stories.”
Not since 01/21/09.
“I guess I underestimated Norm.”
I think Norm has been an oportunistic liar his whole life. I dont think its Norm you underestimated. I think it might be the people who disliked Franken and werent willing to support him inspite of the fact it was Norm as the alternative.
I think the Dems have vastly overestimated Frankens popularity in MN.
Here’s a great cnp about Bobby Jindal, who on one hand trashes the stimulus bill, while writing checks from it with the other — AND taking political credit.
—-
Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-LA) reemerged on the national stage yesterday, penning an op-ed in the Politico to slam efforts to reform health care and declaring the Economic Recovery Act a failure. Jindal declared the Recovery Act “a nearly trillion-dollar stimulus that has not stimulated.†However, less than 24 hours before Jindal published his op-ed, Jindal traveled to Anacoco, Louisiana to present a jumbo-sized check to residents of Vernon Parish. The funds included hundreds of thousands of dollars directly from the Recovery Act — at least $157,848 in Community Block Grant money authorized by the Recovery Act and $138,611 for Byrne/JAG job training programs created by the Recovery Act. Rather than credit the federal government or the Recovery Act he opposed, Jindal printed his own name on the corner of the massive check.
Here’s a link that shows Jindal with the actual check — doesn’t this make you sick Tiny???
There you go pickin on the Indian guy with the “funny” name.
I thought woman and minorities where a protected class?
Racists are we ?
I would have suspended the Fed income tax for 6 months.
Why would I be sick of a politician being a politician.
I’m sure the transparency Democrats wouldn’t pull a stunt like that.
There you go pickin on the Indian guy with the “funny†name.
I thought woman and minorities where a protected class?
Racists are we ?
I’m an equal opportunity despiser of B.S., Tiny. You don’t seem to follow your own standard of being against B.S
“anyhow I wish we would[n't] base our politics on isolated incidences”
This is what I think you meant, tiny, based on your post.
And it’s especially comic (and hypocritical) from someone who argues everything from personal experience and overheard anecdote—like your health care dissatisfaction and poor outcomes “argument” the other day.
Don’t worry, all those stats you are concerned about were considered in drafting the bill. The two sides are just going with what their framers think are the most “persuasive” reasons for their positions.
For Repubs, th nation can only “afford” bloated militarism, oil wars and tax cuts for the rich; health care reform, never. Alternate energy policy, never.
You’re a parrot repeating “No gub’mint health care!”, just like you hear 24/7 on your conservative Noise Machine—-without knowing why or even knowing the size of the existing gub’mint health programs.
“You don’t seem to follow your own standard of being against B.S”
Tiny says
“Why would I be sick of a politician being a politician.”
Okay
What a scumbag.
“You’re a parrot repeating “No gub’mint health care!â€, just like you hear 24/7 on your conservative Noise Machine—-without knowing why or even knowing the size of the existing gub’mint health programs.”
I’d like to know over all how much we ( the governemnt) spends today for peoples healthcare. How many people in need we cover?
This debate seems like we have 100,000′S of people dieing in the streets and we don’t help ANYONE.
“like your health care dissatisfaction and poor outcomes “argument†the other day.”
I said I had none..
More ice and more mix baby !
Well, check out the annual budgets for Medicare, Medicaid and the VA. That’s not all of them, but a good start.
Lets say Bush had the same majority and tried to get SS privatized so as fast as Obama is doing this healthcare.
Can you imagine.
This is a big change lets treat it as such. Get it right.
“Well, check out the annual budgets for Medicare, Medicaid and the VA. That’s not all of them, but a good start.”
And we cant pay for it. If this deal depends on taxing working people’s health care benefits from their employer it will never pass.
“so fast”
It’s been worked on in (various) committees for months. The possible avenues of reform have been discussed since 1993. The “system” of health care finance and costs in this country has been examined and analyzed by experts for decades.
The “too fast!” line is just the latest Repub (i.e private insurance companies) canard and talking point—don’t you know that?
Repubs want more time to use their massive nationwide Noise Machine to bamboozle people (again), especially low info “independents”. Just pass the House bill, and start explaining how it’s gonna work.
Lead, Dems. Get the job done.
No more pointless “discussions” with naysaying, lying conservative Repubs and insurance industry execs. No more months of lying Fox News talking headlice spreading abject lies. The corporate press will not “educate” anyone, ever.
If the nation can’t pass health care reform legislation now, it never will—and our complete and total dysfunction as a nation and a system of govenment will be revealed and proven beyond argument.
“if this deal depends on taxing working people health care benefits…”
It doesn’t.
“This is a big change lets treat it as such. Get it right.”
They can’t even figure out how to pay for it. This is a huge important piece of legislation that legislators on both sides of the isle are still unclear on and who’s details they are confused about. In this case just getting something done to get something done isn’t good enough. It better get done right and it better last.
“if this deal depends on taxing working people health care benefits…â€
Its an option people have discussed. I know you support that idea.
I know you wont be specific but would tell me something? Are you employed? Do you have dependents?
“Lets say Bush had the same majority and tried to get SS privatized so as fast as Obama is doing this healthcare.”
Lets pretend……
parthian says:
“so fastâ€

The “too fast!†line is just the latest Dem (i.e Old people votes and Unions’) canard and talking point—don’t you know that?
Plus you’d add a couple BushCo’s and Strawman and Old people eating Nuclear waste.
“It’s been worked on in (various) committees for months. The possible avenues of reform have been discussed since 1993. The “system†of health care finance and costs in this country has been examined and analyzed by experts for decades.”
We have a general understanding of what the reform should look like thats true. This is a very specific bill, not an idea. We arent looking at the global view right now we are looking at the specifics of a particular bill that will change the way america delivers health care.
“The “too fast!†line is just the latest Repub (i.e private insurance companies) canard and talking point—don’t you know that?”
There are Democrats who readily admit they dont understand the specifics and are confused as to whats in the bill.
“They can’t even figure out how to pay for it.”
Mark stop with the canards. JUST GO ALONG.
“There are Democrats who readily admit they dont understand the specifics and are confused as to whats in the bill.”
FOX NEWS…thats FOX NEWS
Plus anyway I love paying almost 700 bucks a month for insurance for me and my kid.
And I love the 80-20 with the 2 grand deductible.
“Plus anyway I love paying almost 700 bucks a month for insurance for me and my kid.”
Professional student?
“One Democratic senator told CNN that some congressional Democrats are “baffled,”"
What we have here is GOP stalling, err…. Democrat stalling.
“and another senior Democratic source told CNN that those members are frustrated that that they’re not getting more specific direction from him on health care.
“We appreciate the rhetoric and his willingness to ratchet up the pressure but what most Democrats on the Hill are looking for is for the president to weigh in and make decisions on outstanding issues,” the senior Democratic congressional source said.
“Instead of sending out his people and saying the president isn’t ruling anything out, members would like a little bit of clarity on what he would support — especially on how to pay for his health reform bill,” the source added.”
You mean they dont know how to pay for it and need direction? Dems are saying this? Wait, I thought this bill was all elementary and that it was ready to be voted on. The only thing holding it up was the GOP, at least thats what Ive heard. Now Im hearing the Dems dont have direction or a way to pay for it.
Maybe the ‘GOP is stalling’ is a Dem cannard?
The truth is the Dems have the votes, they have the mandate, they lack direction or a way to pay for it. If this bill isnt getting passed its the DEMS FAULT, not the GOP’s.
Professional student?
Just turned 24 only can cover for one more year. Yahooooooo
One thing I haven’t said…
The two important things my parents told me to do.
Pay your bills on time
And always have health insurance
I truly believe some people place the big screen TV over health insurance.
“The Democratic leadership had hoped the work going on behind closed doors for months could bear fruit in time for the president’s news conference Wednesday night.
But multiple Democratic sources told CNN that’s looking very unlikely, and one senior Democratic source said some Democratic leaders are frustrated that Senate negotiators have, “repeatedly missed deadlines.”"
Stop Stalling DEMS!!! Pass this sucker!!! Cant pay for it? Who cares.
So Mark you’re trying to say the Dems have enough of a majority that they could vote on this today and pass it?
Oh the Repucks would just filibuster it in the Senate
“So Mark you’re trying to say the Dems have enough of a majority that they could vote on this today and pass it?”
Yes, its political partisan BS and everyone who claims to be against BS needs to stop blaming a lack of health care reform on the GOP. Even if every single GOP member voted it down, the Dems could pass this right now if they wanted to. They dont need a GOP president to sign it and they dont need any GOPers to cross the aisle. This is there problem, so lead or STFU.
Blaiming this on the GOP is passing the buck period the end.
““If we can get to consensus, we’re going to move,†House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., told reporters. “If we can’t get to consensus, we’re going to continue to work on creating consensus.—
They dont need a single GOP vote so when he says they need a consensus he means the Dems cant come to an agreement.
I’d like to see insurance industry reform and maybe a payment level based on income. That gets everybody in the system and lets go from there.
“Members have concerns, and they’re not just Blue Dogs,” House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., told reporters, referring to a group of conservative Democrats. “I want to make it very clear that there’s progressives, Blue Dogs and everybody in between who have expressed concerns and we’re working on that.”
I still thinks its because of FOX news. Maybe Rush a little bit.
“WASHINGTON (CNN) — The contentious health care reform debate intensified Wednesday as a bipartisan group of congressmen opposed to abortion pledged to fight any bill that fails to exclude the procedure from the scope of government-defined benefits.”
The important word here is BIPARTISAN. There are democrats who arent falling into line here. You progressives on here fond of blaming the lack of a Health Care reform bill, better acknowledge that and stop blaming this on the GOP, something anyone who cant count to 60 knows is a lie.
I was surprised like NDSU and other colleges don’t offer a affordable health insurance for students.
You would think the kids could get 100 bucks a month premiums being a low risk group.
Lets work to reform doing these things not the government running the thing.
Frickin’ Repucks
Oh, there’s no doubt that the “conservative” Dems are holding things up in the House, despite Hoyer’s attempt to protect them. I didn’y say Repubs could block a vote in the House, they can’t.
How the House bill is paid for is clear, and if members really “have questions” they can easily get the answers from the bill’s authors, they are members of Congress after all, their calls will get returned.
Deacon’s other quotes are from unnamed “congressional” sources and are likely from the senate side. But the point is that the Repubs want to have this vote put off until after the August recess, and some insurer-lovin’ Blue Dogs are certainly pulling for the same thing. If it’s just a question of having questions answered about the bill, then that shouldn’t be a basis to stop a vote in a few days.
So this is BS from the Blue Dogs, who (as usual) sound like Repubs. The leadership will need to crack the whip on them.
“The leadership will need to crack the whip on them.”
Absolutely correct. But lets be honest about why this Bill hasnt been voted on. Nothing the GOP could do can stop this thing from getting done so if there is any blame to be placed for a lack of a vote it rests squarely on the Dem’s leadership, plain and simple. Anything said to the contrary is a lie for partisan benefit. The GOP can cry and whine all they want, but at the end of the day the DEMS have the WH, a willing president, a filibuster proof senate and a majority in the house. What they lack is consensus and a way to pay for it.
Any blame being thrust on the GOP is a Democrats way of deflecting responsibility for their own problems.
“Oh, there’s no doubt that the “conservative†Dems are holding things up in the House, despite Hoyer’s attempt to protect them. I didn’y say Repubs could block a vote in the House, they can’t”
Than stop bitch’in at me or FOX news or Repucks.
Sounds like your problem buddy
“I didn’y say Repubs could block a vote in the House, they can’t—
Really? Okay, well then lets just say that in the past two days you’ve doen your best to imply that its the Republicans responsible for the delays even though you know they have absolutely no control over a vote being taken and a bill passed on health care reform. Here is a small sample of what you’ve said:
“The fact is Repubs could participate in these bills if they wanted to aid the reform efforts—-but they don’t. They (as usual) want merely to obstruct and delay and block reform.
Now they want delay on health care, solely to blow it up. They are quite open about their motivation. Standard operating procedure for a corrupt corporate party.
The Repubs corporate masters counsel “delay†on health care reform because they much prefer the status quo, which has been quite profitable to the nation’s giant health insurers with their anti-competitive markets.
The insurers’ servile puppets—the Repubs themselves—want delay mainly for political purposes.”
Would you say your totally full of sh:t or just partially?
A recent poll conducted via telephone by the Washington Post and ABC news found that fewer Americans are lending their support to President Obama’s healthcare reform plans.
According to the figures, only 49 percent of respondents feel confident about the administration’s plans for healthcare whereas in June, 53 percent expressed their approval.
53%
All Repucks?
All influenced by that Evil Fox News
Or maybe its that Fat Old Rush.
Now remember how important the polls where where when that stubborn @sshole Bush wouldn’t do what the American people wanted and get out of Iraq.
So many “quotes” of poll ones head would spin. Argue, Argue but back to the poll and that stubborn SOB Bush not doing what the American people demanded.
So following that …..
No Obama Healthcare
Count this as yet another strike against Harry Reid’s leadership. They really need to get someone else to be majority leader.
“Count this as yet another strike against Harry Reid’s leadership.”
That and its getting to be about the time where the Dems needs to act like they are the majority party and stop living in the past.
Well thanks for the digest of my posts, deacon, I’m glad you’re reading them.
Everything I said about the Repubs’ motivation, desires and tactics is quite correct. They are providing necessary cover for the Blue Dogs, who are only a few steps away from being their open allies.
And the corporate press continues to give the Repubs equal (if not greater) air time and act as though they have more actual power than their numbers dictate. Finally, the senate is not the House, even with 60 nominal Dems. 100% Repub opposition will be very effective in delaying and possibly even blocking reform there.
“Conservative” and Repub lies, falsehoods and 100% opposition on health care reform remain highly relevant to the situation, and they continue to have the power to move and shape the debate and the national “discussion” via their lying 24/7 Noise Machine, which they spent a lot of money to create and which essentially is now keeping them alive as a party—that’s likely the reason for the wildly inconsistent and volatile polls we’re seeing on health care reform.
The conservative Noise Machine and the complicit corporate press are doing everything they can to play up industry objections and push the Repubs “delay!” story. So the Party of No will thus bear some blame for a health care crack-up and they certainly believe they can stop it!
But I’m in substantial agreement with you, if health care blows up or has to be meaningless window dressing the blame will (mostly) fall on the Dems. They have the necessary power in the House and all the power any party can reasonably hope ever to obtain in the quagmire that is the senate. There will certainly be a House vote, sometime, but they can’t let the Blue Dogs stop meaningful reform.
Pelosi has now said that the House may be held over in August to get the vote accomplished, a good decision.
If health care reform (and financial reform for that matter) is not passed by Dems now, then it can’t be passed ever and our country will have to acknowledge that our political system is hopelessly broken beyond repair.
“Everything I said about the Repubs’ motivation, desires and tactics is quite correct.”
Like I said they can scream and whine and hold their breathe, it wont make any difference or delay a single thing. What I dont get is you pay virtually all your attention and dedicate all your posts to ripping the group that has no control. Why? Its the Dems you should rip if you really care about getting this done considering they have the power and ability to do it.
“100% Repub opposition will be very effective in delaying and possibly even blocking reform there.”
Thats deflection if Ive ever seen it. Take responsibility for your party Parth. If they cant do it, it wont be the 40 Republican senators who stopped it.
“If health care reform (and financial reform for that matter) is not passed by Dems now, then it can’t be passed ever and our country will have to acknowledge that our political system is hopelessly broken beyond repair.”
Now we are getting somewhere Parth. This I TOTALLY agree with.
“Any blame being thrust on the GOP is a Democrats way of deflecting responsibility for their own problems.”
And political cover perhaps for any Democrat receiving political encouragement in inSTALLments from the the vested interests in the sausage making process of this bill. I somehow believe Obama would prefer to be thanking conservative Democrats for passage of this bill rather than making nice with the “Democratic wing of the Democrat party.”
Deacon Blues says:

Absolutely correct, but it is painfully obvious facts and history mean little to the leftie BQ’ers!
I dont begrudge the Dems getting weak knees over these budgets busters–healthcare, cap and tax etc
Our govt is broke, broke, broke.
WHO can blame the majority party for having angst? Not me. This is not the time for big initatives.
End of story.
How about working on jobs, bringing the budget to, say, less than a trillion deficit, etc etc.
There is a reason polls are diving on the O-man, people are ticked at the insanity of our current budget.
I hear it everyday at work!
Yes, the Dems can easily pass any old budget they want, but the difficulty now being witnessed shows some Dems do have fiscal common sense.
“WHO can blame the majority party for having angst? Not me. This is not the time for big initatives.
End of story.”
It could be worse. The State of California, land of big initiatives, is not leading the way with a solution for the nation lately. The governor is talking to himself… auf Deutsch. Lettuce anyone ?
It could be worse.
Oh, I agree.
10-11% unemployment isnt as bad as 20%.
And most of the bad news has long since been revealed, unlike say, the recession of 7/2001, but now it mostly just the prospect of a jobless recovery.
But why oh why, NOW, take on healthcare or cap and trade, as these could wait a couple years.?.
The problem is the GI-NORMOUS disconnect between Fed revenue and Fed spending.
At a time Medicare and SS become more demanding………?
I am watching the O-man stammer his way thru Q and A now, and he is obviously clueless about the delivery of healthcare at the frontlines.
And this will be a budget buster of epic proportions, of this there is no doubt.
Tiny said:

Quite right. The wisdom I gained from my ancestors went more or less like “God helps those who help themselves (& /or be strong and thank God for your good health while your at it) and “maintain a good credit rating.” The helath insurance part was kind of stipulated.
Obama is having laughingly bad Q+A.
Gawd, he’s stammering, and looks like he would like to be somewhere else.
Calls on wrong person, again
)
Tapper nailed him on the sacrifices.
The lady on Cspan and transparency–good for her.
Obama talking on ENT and tonsils–who knew Obama had a medical degree?
Wow, I have to wonder if he gained dem votes tonite?
I wouldnt bet on it………
“he is obviously clueless about the delivery of healthcare at the frontlines.”
Says someone who is clueless about delivery of healthcare at the frontlines.
Here’s a new discussion topic for those it interests. ROWE = Results Only Work Environment. Based on theories of former Best Buy executives whose book is reviewed in link hereunder, I’d be interested in hearing both liberal and conservative perspectives on whether this concept provides the win/win outcomes it promises (i.e more productivity and leisure at the same time) or indeed whether it threatens to turn your job into your hobby, preempting all non work-related definitions of “self.”

Hey, look, Dora stops in from her perpetual Stupid Patrol to throw a zinger.
Ow, that hurt, Dora. NOT! HAHAHAHAHA.
Did you figure out what 6 years the Repubs had the WH and Congress, yet?
;O)
How about weighing in on the issues tonite, Capt Dora?
Will Obama be swaying those BlueDogs with his performance tonite?
I am thinking: NO.
“Who knew W would be known as the coherent President?”
Love that one from the frontpage story site, BTW.
It wasnt Obama’s best night, of this there is no doubt.
And why weigh in on the Harvard story?
Is he looking to alienate people?
BIZZARO WORLD TONITE.
Ad:
I looked at the link, and I like the ROWE idea alot–I am paid purely on production so on my free time at work I am always cruising the net, etc and it makes work fun. It’s kind of ROWE.
Conversely, I dont even have paid sick days, but that is OK.
Isnt the limit here the job, however? ie teachers, police, fireman, soldiers etc are stuck in a place for X time, and “results” are nebulus based on students, or crime, or emergencies etc
I think for many business types and professionals, it is great. One cant argue against the success of Bestbuy. And if it makes– job like a hobby– isnt that the way to enjoy life?
Good link.
“..teachers, police, fireman, soldiers etc are stuck in a place for X time, and “results†are nebulus based on students, or crime, or emergencies etc”
That’s one of the main criticisms and problems for ROWE. In these professions it would seem there needs to be a new way of quantifying and reallocating the heavy lifting of an entire work force. It is contrary to the concept of “presenteeism” or showing up every day to work, lunchbag in hand, and putting in TIME.
“It is contrary to the concept of “presenteeism†or showing up every day to work, lunchbag in hand, and putting in TIME.”
There’s a lot to be said for presenteeism. Didn’t GHWB say that it was 60% of life?
