Rep. Keith Ellison’s office confirmed a report from Khartoum Monday that the Minneapolis congressman is due in the Sudanese capital tomorrow to discuss the humanitarian situation in Darfur.
Ellison, a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, was arrested in Washington as part of a protest against the Sudanese embassy. The protest came in response to the expulsion of 13 aid groups from Sudan after an international arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omer Al-Bashir.
The English-language Sudan Tribune, citing sources in the Sudanese foreign ministry, said Ellison will meet with presidential advisor Gazi Salah Edin to discuss “boosting cooperation between the Sudan and the United States” on Darfur. According to the paper, Ellison is also scheduled to visit North Darfur, where he will meet with local government and United Nations and African Union officials, as well as “internally displaced persons.”
Ellison, the first Muslim elected to Congress, is also expected to go to Juba to visit with southern Sudanese officials to discuss a peace agreement. The paper reports that the trip comes amid “high expectations” for the lifting of economic sanctions against Sudan and the country’s removal from a terrorism list.
A separate report from the Qatar News Agency says it will be a five-day trip.
Ellison’s office, citing security concerns, has made no public announcement about the congressionally-sponsored trip.
That’s great, now talk about the health care town hall he threw and nearly everyone gave a talk about not having universal health care.
How is this helping North Minneapolis and the unemployed in his area. Fix this first them go to personal agenda areas
This guys is a hack!
Could someone at the Strib do some research and look into how much taxpayer money Mr. Ellison has spent on traveling to other countries? I feel like that is that only thing that he is in the news for. Especially at a time like this when the government should be cutting unnecessary travel because of decreased tax revenues. I’m just irked that housing prices are down because of the economy and my property tax bill is higher in 2009 than 2008.
“I’m just irked that housing prices are down because of the economy and my property tax bill is higher in 2009 than 2008.”
Thats because your property value went up in 2008. In 2010 your taxes will be lower due to a decrease in value in ‘09.
So when I look at my tax info online, and it says “Value and Tax Summary for Taxes Payable 2008-Values Established by Assessor as of January 2, 2007″ is 200K and “Value and Tax Summary for Taxes Payable 2009-Values Established by Assessor as of January 2, 2008″ is 190K, that doesn’t mean that my housing value is less on my ‘09 taxes?
Were there any assesments?
no sir
Well then its a mystery. How much did they go up?
Somewhere on this website or the SPPP there’s a story that talks about this. There wasn’t a good explanantion, but it’s happening all over.
Are we sure that gall’s municipality didn’t raise property tax rates in 2009?
Cities are strapped and looking for more funds—it’s called the Great Recession and MN state aid to cities went down.
Anyway, it’s nothing to do with Ellison and his trip to Darfur.
Get rid of this worthless hack and ALL of his buddies!
Is that the chant;
Ellison to Darfur
or
Ellison ‘totoooooo’oo’o Darfur
Aren’t Muslims killing non-Muslims in Darfur in order to spread Islam and causing the massacre? I wonder what’s Keith Hakim Ellison is up to.
“I wonder what’s Keith Hakim Ellison is up to ?”
Trying singlehandedly to offset China’s influence in Sudan?
The Chinese want to perpetuate Sudan’s standoff with the West, thereby giving themselves an exclusive sphere of influnece there. Maybe Ellison’s complaining to fellow Moslems about China’s mistreatment of their Muslim brothers, the Uighers?
“Trying singlehandedly to offset China’s influence in Sudan?”
I think the radical Islamists are a much greater threat to peace in the region than the ChiComms.
“How is this helping North Minneapolis and the unemployed in his area. Fix this first them go to personal agenda areas”
No Sh!t.
Last I looked his job is to represent the people of the 5th district.
I had no idea it extended all the way to Sudan.

Didn’t Nixon send Nelson Rockefeller on an ambassadorial tour of all the South American nations allied to the US? The trip rocked all right. He was relieved
to return home intact.
I would hope that Ellison’s not traveling on the 5th District’s dime. Wonder what kind of goodwill tour the president has in store for all his erstwhile friends who’ve embarrassed him: Gates, his former minister. A shuttle diplomacy trip to Zimbabwe?
This man is a disgrace to mn. He should move to the middle east to be with the rest of the towel heads. He does nothing for his district
Ellison is on the House Foreign Affairs committee, geniuses. This trip is part of his “job”—and as though he should only focus on policy matters that directly affect the 5th District.
Is this your highly sophisticated, informed view of all House members on that committee? Think this trip to Sudan is some luxurious junket? Jeebus, how stupid.
He’s the only muslim member of Congress and this is a disastrous, long-standing muslim-related conflict that Bushco had no ability to obtain any progress on. Ellison was likely asked to get involved in the diplomacy.
But it’s great to see so much concern and understanding (let alone admiration) for Ellison thanklessly trying to do something to resolve a protracted genocide—you’re great at seeing the big picture!
Bitter, small-minded philistines.

and now…

Classy. 2Dim, are you recruiting these racist hatemongers from your site to post here?
Parth, don’t you think he should be fighting the gay people who are trying to destroy my marriage? Or blocking dangerous, non-binding legislation to recognize Hawaii’s 50th anniversary as a state?
It’s quite remarkable how many people on the internet are petty, ignorant Know Nothings, SgtP, motivated by ethnic and religious prejudices and pure self interest. And this in our highly educated MN!
It’s one of the many reasons our country is now failing and can’t reform itself or deal with our multitudinous looming crises. Too many citizens are simply too crappy and small minded.
A democracy cannot be better than its citizens, and we have “produced” way too many pinheaded 2Dims and Bogeygmans as a result of the failed Conservative Era.
Could CS, D2, adlib and bogeyman give me the dates and times of their posts when they went off on Pawlenty for his travels abroad as having absolutely no value for Minnesotans? I just want to make sure you four aren’t partisan hypocrits.
“Could CS, D2, adlib and bogeyman give me the dates and times of their posts when they went off on Pawlenty for his travels abroad as having absolutely no value for Minnesotans?”
Soon as the BQ post something like that I will.
Parth, don’t you think he should be fighting the gay people who are trying to destroy my marriage?
Do you think he should fight for those gays in some Islamic countries, that live under a threat of the death penalty?
