Cutting off all federal taxpayer dollars to ACORN (The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now) is a good start, but Congress and the Executive Branch must do more.
The American people deserve no less than a full-scale, no-stone-unturned Congressional investigation.
It is now clear that ACORN – which is national in scope and exerts a dangerous influence over politicians and the political process at the local and national levels – is not just a far-left political organization that is not beyond bending or breaking a few laws to advance a radical agenda.
In fact, apparent lawlessness by ACORN representatives seems to be part of the organization’s modus operandi.
ACORN’s true colors were exposed during last year’s presidential campaign when the self-proclaimed community organizing group was implicated in several instances of voter registration fraud and other illicit activity to the benefit of Barack Obama.
Now we learn that ACORN workers in major cities across the country (Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Brooklyn and two cities in California so far) were caught on tape advising undercover documentarians on how to lie to the government so they could establish a brothel for underage, illegal immigrant girls.
The fact that ACORN has been the recipient of your tax dollars – at least 53 million since 1994 – for so many years is egregious. Especially when you consider that the group’s workings and dealings appear to replicate those of an organized criminal enterprise.
That’s why merely cutting off government funding for ACORN – which is a good start – simply does not go far enough.
We need an ACORN Commission. Heads need to roll… long prison sentences should eventually be handed out… and yes, ACORN’s ties to the liberal political establishment must be part of such an investigation.
A message needs to be sent. No group can commit such atrocious acts and get away with it.
ACORN must be stopped cold and it’s up to concerned and patriotic Americans like us to make it happen.

I visited a kibbutze while visiting my relatives in Israel. Not only did they have strict security requirements to enter, they had bomb shelters in the middle of their children’s playgounds and made them go in their daily and plauy to achieve a comfort level incase of an Islamic terror attack.

So why was a speech last week by Prof. Mojib Latif of Germany’s Leibniz Institute not given more prominence?
Latif is one of the leading climate modellers in the world. Well, I was just quoting you on “most educated”, 6DJ, which to me means somewhat more than “how long is the training before one can bill for puncturing an infected boil on a butt”.
After studying a pre-determined “pre-med” program, doctors get their academic degree (an MD) after 4 years of medical school. After that, there is no additional required academic degree and are many years of additional hands-on training— but this clinical training is going on even in medical school. So doctors are “working” (with patients under strict and not so strict supervision) fairly rapidly.
Clinical, internship, residency, etc. is just more training, usually with some institution making some money off their “work” even as trainees. It mostly seems to be a matter of how many years do MDs have to see patients under “supervision”. I suppose you could call this “education”. Another word would be “apprenticeship”.
But as you may have guessed, I don’t really define years of training before one gets to be an independent billing unit as years of “education”, although that’s clearly your definition.
Doctors spend a huge amount of time studying “medicine”, but are not particulary “educated” as people, IMO. Their training is for the most part heavily weighted towards biological science for obvious reasons. They are usually woefully ignorant of very basic knowledge in history, philosophy, politics, literature, natural science, and the arts. Certainly these topics form very little of their “education”.
Their training is so narrow in scope that medicine is about all they ever learn. Hence despite their years of medical training, it is quite dubious to call them America’s “most educated”. They likely are America’s “most trained”, I’ll give you that.
It also seems to me that their education for some reason seems to make most of them exceptionally interested in material matters—golf trips, ski vacations, car n’ driver trivia, second homes, stuffin’ their oversize houses with high end consumer crapola, financial investments, mindless travel to the sun belt, luxury dining (steak houses), etc. A nation’s true intelligensia is far less interested in such stuff and always has been.
So as for carrying on an interesting conversation at, say, a party, doctors aren’t very well “prepared” by their decade or so of training. I’ve learned to steer clear, since they are so often crashing bores adept only at talking about themselves. This is obviously a personal view, and of course there are exceptions.

When one looks at his actual remarks, Latif was speaking hypothetically, asking how would scientists respond IF short term natural variation didn’t generate a new record high temp year in the next few years.
He simply didn’t say that “we are likely entering” a multi-decade cooling phase, or make any such prediction, so your sewage troughs misled you again—not that you care.
As for the long debunked GW “petition”, you don’t even know what it says. It was the subject of a National Academy of Sciences press statement declaring that it intentionally misled people into thinking it was associated with the NAS when it wasn’t.
Most researchers who has looked into it have declared the names to be an unverifiable mess—so we don’t know anything about many of the signatories or their claimed credentials.

But the problem with our two party “system” is that the out-of-power party (no matter how brain dead, corrupt, and filled with cretins, like today’s Repubs) is the only alternative.
National election reform (which allowed a multiplicity of parties to obtain some power) would immensely improve our democracy, and allow catastrophically failed parties (like the Repubs) to be consigned to permanent oblivion and ultimate dissolution—the fate they richly deserve.
But such reform is quite unlikely in hopelessly inert, tradition-bound America, with its entrenched special interests and armies of apologists for the status quo.
Hence, the brain dead Repub party and corrupt “conservative” movement can always theoretically bounce back, especially when the MSM make certain that the underlying reasons for the current economic meltdown and endless crises (i.e brain dead conservative policies) are not very well understood by the ordinary voter.

The congressional legislation intended to defund ACORN, passed with broad bipartisan support, is written so broadly that it applies to “any organization” that has been charged with breaking federal or state election laws, lobbying disclosure laws, campaign finance laws or filing fraudulent paperwork with any federal or state agency. It also applies to any of the employees, contractors or other folks affiliated with a group charged with any of those things.
In other words, the bill could plausibly defund the entire military-industrial complex. Whoops.
Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) picked up on the legislative overreach and asked the Project on Government Oversight (POGO) to sift through its database to find which contractors might be caught in the ACORN net.
Lockheed Martin and Northrop Gumman both popped up quickly, with 20 fraud cases between them, and the longer list is a Who’s Who of weapons manufacturers and defense contractors.
The language was written by the GOP and filed as a “motion to recommit” in the House, where it passed 345-75. It carried the Senate by an 83-7 margin.

I guess you do agree, on medical doctors having the most education, if one can define what the meaning of
“education” is. This is all done on the govt dime/funding as well, so isnt it so odd that the trial lawyers are unleashed upon the medical field, while legislators, the military, even state and local govts have major or complete tort shields for their decisions.
Yet, doctors are left hanging in a field where pretty much every decision can be second-guessed.
Little wonder then: why our doctors order 500-700 billion!!! (ouch) in needless tests every year. Our govt in action!

But trying to communicate such scientific nuances to the public — and to policy makers — can be frustrating, they say.
Mojib Latif, a prize-winning climate and ocean scientist from the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences at the University of Kiel, in Germany, wrote a paper last year positing that cyclical shifts in the oceans were aligning in a way that could keep temperatures over the next decade or so relatively stable, even as the heat-trapping gases linked to global warming continued to increase.
But Dr. Latif, who gives about 200 talks to the public, business leaders and officials each year, said he had been met with confusion and even anger when he tried to describe this normal variation in climate while at the same time conveying the long-term threat of global warming.

In other words, short term climate variation has little to do with long term global warming. Yeah, that’s funny as heck. And climate researchers in dispute? Of course there are differeing opinions, as has been said before, no one has the final word on ANYTHING in science. There is , however, a pretty large degree of consensus on what is going on. This, from the NYT:

2Dim, what are you — Norwegian or something? People said the same things about the Scandanavians coming here back in the late 1800s. A lot of the Swedes and Norwegians who came here were soc1a1ists and/or communists — certainly a larger percentage than the Somalis that are fundamentalist.
I’m grateful we have the opportunity to have Somalis living here. The ones I know are hard working, friendly, moral, don’t drink or use drugs, take pride in their neighborhoods and respect authority — and they believe in “family values”. Like the Hmong people, I’m sure they’re going to gradually integrate into our society and eventually become more Minnesotan than Somali.
In fact, I’d bet if the MN GOP reached out to them, they’d be committed Republicans by the time they became citizens. The DFL reached out to Hmong people when they came here, now that many of them are US citizens, guess how they vote?
Given the fact that Somalis and conservative Americans share a lot of the same values, why do you suppose the GOP isn’t seizing this opportunity?

A conference of global warming skeptics is scheduled for May 2010. They plan to examine the “growing divide between what science has to say about the causes, scale, and consequences of climate change, on the one hand, and what politicians and the media say on the other hand”. This is an important and illuminating topic. One hopes (rather futilely) that the agenda will include the paper Examining the Scientific Consensus on Climate Change (Doran 2009). The authors surveyed 3146 earth scientists, asking them the following survey question:
Do you think human activity is a significant contributing factor in changing mean global temperatures?
What is most interesting is that the authors categorised the scientists based on their level of expertise in climate science. For example, those considered the most qualified were climate scientists who had more than 50% of their peer-reviewed publications in the past 5 years on the subject of climate change. The results are shown in Figure 1:
What they find was as the level of active research and specialization in climate science increases, so does agreement that humans are significantly changing global temperatures. Most striking is the divide between expert climate scientists (97.4%) and the general public (58%). The paper concludes:
It seems that the debate on the authenticity of global warming and the role played by human activity is largely nonexistent among those who understand the nuances and scientific basis of long-term climate processes. The challenge, rather, appears to be how to effectively communicate this fact to policy makers and to a public that continues to mistakenly perceive debate among scientists.

Ng is Chinese. I don’t know much about St Paul politics, but I do know about Hmong folks — I did some anthro work on Hmong culture back in ye olde grad school days.
You can most always tell by the last name, which comes from their clan. There are something like 16 or so Hmong clans, and with few exceptions, Hmong people are members of one — so if they don’t have a Hmong last name, they’re probably not Hmong. Here are the ones I remember:

Moua
Hang
Kong
Her
Lee (obviously could also be Korean or Chinese)
Lor
Xiong
…can’t think of the other ones, but I believe there are 16.
Hmong culture is cool and interesting — basically they’ve been kicking people’s butts for the last 700 years or so. They were a tremendous asset for us in Vietnam — many Hmong died saving American lives. (just trying to head off the obligatory criticism that 2Dim will undoubtedly toss out there).
