First Wetterling Ad

September 18th, 2006 – 11:49 AM by Eric Black

The Patty Wetterling campaign started airing its first TV ad today and it’s viewable on the campaign website.

It starts with the abduction of Jacob Wetterling and focuses child safety issues.

What think?

Sounds like Patty has to diversify her message a bit.

When asked about anything else, she doesn’t do so well. This is the one issue on which she has any credibility. That’s sad because a) she had to suffer the worst tragedy imaginable for a parent and b) there’s a chance she could be a member of congress in 2007.

Mark says:

September 18th, 2006 at 2:12 pm

Based only on her name recogniztion from that tragedy. I doubt that she will win in the very conservative 6th District that is completely in tune with Michelle Bachman. THe fact is that Mark Kennedy was not conservative enough for the district.

With that said, it will be a pretty tight race with Bachman winning a slight majority in a district a conservative candidate should carry with 60% of the vote.

MR says:

September 18th, 2006 at 2:22 pm

I was so happy to see Bachmann get nominated. I don’t think that Wetterling would have had a chance against a decent candidate, but against an extremist nut-job like Bachmann, Wetterling might do something. It’ll be a closer race than it should be in a republican district.

bsimon says:

September 18th, 2006 at 2:30 pm

I doubt that most voters in the 6th would describe themselves as “in tune with Michele Bachman” if they knew what some of her positions were.

Chip says:

September 18th, 2006 at 2:55 pm

Talking about extremist nutjob’s, Rep. John Kline’s district director (and former MN House Member) was videoed harrassing Veterans and their families at an event at the VFW in Rosemount Sunday.

John Murtha was appearing there to endorse Coleen Rowley to a standing-room only group of Veterans of all ages.

What does it say about Kline, a military man himself, who sends his staff out to harrass fellow veterans at a VFW. Doesn’t seem like the kind of guy to help break up any partisan gridlock either, does he?

I like Patty. I like Coleen. Gotta send a new type of person to Washington, and these two would be perfect.

Mark says:

September 18th, 2006 at 3:19 pm

” doubt that most voters in the 6th would describe themselves as “in tune with Michele Bachman” if they knew what some of her positions were.”

Then you really do not understand much about the 6th Congressional District, absolutely the most socially conservative district in the state. Only Ramstad’s 3rd is a more solidly Republican district and that is because those western suburb precincts are upper income.

bsimon says:

September 18th, 2006 at 3:23 pm

“Then you really do not understand much about the 6th Congressional District, absolutely the most socially conservative district in the state.”

Really. You think the 6th is down with the idea of cutting all public funding for schools? Ms. Bachmann has some opinions that are on the fringe of the fringe. I doubt many voters would line up with her there.

MJ says:

September 18th, 2006 at 3:33 pm

Those “nut-job” positions Michelle Bachmann holds: people should be able to keep more of the money they earn, marriage is between a man and a woman, innocent life should be protected, and capitalism works.

Crazy concepts, ay? Sheds some light on who the nut-jobs really are.

And Wetterling and Rowley are nothing new. They’re the typical out-of-the-maintream lefties the Dems have tossed out there for the past several election cycles. It won’t work, and Minnesota (and the country) will be better off for it.

Mark says:

September 18th, 2006 at 3:39 pm

“You think the 6th is down with the idea of cutting all public funding for schools? ”

Whatever. No one in their right mind has ever realistically proposed this.

Her views on taxes, abortion, gay marriage, are all in line with the 6th District, far more so than Patty Wetterling.

Lets put it this way, if Patty Wetterling runs in the 5th District she beats Keith Ellison. In the 6th even with her high name recognition she is an also ran against a guy like Mark Kennedy, who beat her 56-44 in 2004.

bsimon says:

September 18th, 2006 at 3:43 pm

Actually, MJ, not all of those positions are characterized as “nut job.” Nice job on your part though, in misrepresenting what others are saying.

In any case, seeing how Kennedy won a close race in 2004 – and collected less votes than GWB in that election – do you characterize Bachmann as being likely to do better in 2004? In an election year where the GOP is losing support, and they offer an extremely socially conservative candidate – possibly the most conservative MN has seen – do you really think she’s aligned with “mainstream” 6th district voters? I suggest she is not.

MJ says:

September 18th, 2006 at 3:45 pm

For most Dems, the public school system is an end in itself. You throw money at it, the big unions give you money, and you call it “good”. When anyone questions why you believe one approach fits every kid and why so many kids are doing terribly in school, you demand more money for public schools ONLY.

I think Bachmann believes that the end for which we should strive is a great education for each child. And to achieve that, different kids need different kinds of schools (public, private or home).

This approach to education is another reason Bachmann is the far better candidate. Your teacher’s unions won’t like it, but parents and kids will.

Mark says:

September 18th, 2006 at 3:59 pm

“do you really think she’s aligned with “mainstream” 6th district voters? I suggest she is not. ”

Again, you have no clue what you are talking about. There is no doubt that Bachman’s views are the mainstream in this district. Enough said.

bsimon says:

September 18th, 2006 at 4:04 pm

Well, Mark, if you say so, it must be.

bsimon says:

September 18th, 2006 at 4:14 pm

MJ, school choice is one thing, separating school & the state is entirely another. I think MN parents would applaud a plan to improve their kids’ educations. However, eliminating public schools would likely not meet with much approval. Or have you forgotten Ms. Bachmann’s association with the “Alliance for the Separation of School and State?”

Mark says:

September 18th, 2006 at 4:24 pm

“Well, Mark, if you say so, it must be. ”

It is. Listen, any district that would give Mark Kennedy 56% of its votes is very conservative.

Ed E says:

September 18th, 2006 at 4:29 pm

I am growing tired of people who don’t know much about schools always taking aim at them. If I hear one more politician talk about holding schools and teachers more accountable I’m going to get violently sick.

Some day we are going to have a candidate who is willing to stand up there and say that we need to hold students, parents and society more accountable.

Do people think that teachers go into the profession for the money? The fame? The respect? The short work days? The low stress? Really, give me a break. Teachers go into the profession cuz they want to help kids succeed. Those same teachers hold themselves accountable every day.

On the other hand, we have students who rarely come to school ready or eager to learn. They come to school with their cell phones, iPods and text messaging and do it in class. They balk at doing 1/2 hour of homework and their parents don’t hold them accountable either.

Foreign students that come to this country, when asked, are most amazed by the lack of motivation from American students. And it is not from lack of effort on the part of schools and teachers.

And people who say more money is not the answer are right in most ways. Money will not solve this societal problem. Paying teachers more would help to attract good people to teaching, but schools already have a lot of good teachers who have been willing to work for beans.

If you were a manager or supervisor who had subordinates who weren’t willing to work, would it be fair for people to see you as a “failing manager”? Somehow we need to put the importance and value of a good education back into the equation so parents and students will get motivated to work harder.

bsimon says:

September 18th, 2006 at 4:29 pm

How many did it give to W?

Mark says:

September 18th, 2006 at 4:30 pm

“If you were a manager or supervisor who had subordinates who weren’t willing to work, would it be fair for people to see you as a “failing manager”? ”

YES!

Mark says:

September 18th, 2006 at 4:35 pm

Kennedy ran a couple of points behind Bush and also a couple of points behind the level of vote he received in 2002. THis was because he faced a challenger with higher name recogniztion and more funding.

EL says:

September 18th, 2006 at 6:14 pm

Patty Wetterling is a candidate who is about bringing families together – and desperately wishes she could bring her family back together. Michelle Bachmann’s endless tirades against gay marriage ended up with a relative testifying against the amendment in the state legislature – driving her family apart.

Mark says:

September 18th, 2006 at 6:30 pm

And exactly WHAT government policy is going to “bring families together”? I guess that you have an extraordinary view of what the purpose and capabilities of governement are.

Michelle Bachman’s views on gay marriage are supported by 60% of the citizens of MN (I am NOT amongst them). It is the Democrats that have fought to keep the people from having any input on this matter.

On this issue the Democrats and most of their candidates are WAY out of the mainstream.

I live in the 6th District and will be voting for Michele. I heard her speak over the weekend and was very impressed with what she had to say, especially on controlling our borders and terrorism.

Patty suffered a terrible tragedy, but that shouldn’t qualify her for the US Congress.

Matt S. says:

September 18th, 2006 at 8:20 pm

Survey USA Poll: Bachmann 50%, Wetterling 41%.

How many times do I have to say it…if Wetterling really wanted to go to Congress to better push child safety legislation she should have run against Jim Oberstar or Sabo before he retired. Both voted against the Amber Alert and other child safety bills. No, you don’t have to live in the district to run, just the state.

idealist says:

September 18th, 2006 at 8:36 pm

Michele has said that the #1 issue facing the people of Minnesota is gay marriage which is, of course, ludicrous!! How can she campaign on family values when she spent a HUGE amount of her time at the legislature trying(and failing)to make life more difficult for GLBT citizens, one of whom is her step sister. Thanksgiving Dinner at their house must be really interesting. I hope that none of those foster children she brags about happened to be GLBT as she probably really messed with their heads.

You’ve made our point, Mark. People who are supporting Bachmann–advocates of eliminating public education–aren’t in their right mind. But they’ve contributed nearly $50,000 to Bachmann’s campaign so far.

Do you think a candidate who says being gay is “part of Satan” is mainstream in the 6th too, Mark? Especially when the candidate has a gay step-sister? How well did the gay-baiting play against Dean Johnson and Paul Koering in the primary?

DJ says:

September 18th, 2006 at 9:49 pm

Sadly, Patty’s message is being missed here.

Her ad is stating that due to horrendous circumstances, rather than sit complacently on the “sidelines” in Minnesota, she choose to go to Washington and work hard to make changes in our system, to help protect innocent children.

It took tremendous courage to take on the bureaucracy in D.C., and amazing tenacity to see Jacob’s Bill become law. Imagine yourself in her position, and tell me how many people that you know, that would have the strength of character to see her task through?

Another extremely important message in the ad is that Patty Wetterling is able to conduct business with people from any political party. It is most obvious that Michelle Bachmann is an obstructionist politician who is (pardon the phrase) hell-bent on an extremely narrow, ultra-radical partisan agenda.

Michelle Bachmann is a very, very scary lady.

Mark says:

September 18th, 2006 at 9:58 pm

Michelle Bachman is a CHristian that believes that homosexuality is a sin. THey believe that sin can be redeemed and that they can be “saved”.

And, YES, I do think that her views on homosexuality are mainstream in the 6th District. In fact, I am certain.

SO what?

Mark says:

September 18th, 2006 at 10:05 pm

“hell-bent on an extremely narrow, ultra-radical partisan agenda”

Such as? The entire focus on Michelle Bachman is the gay marriage issue. The problem with your claim about ULTRA RADICAL is that her views are mainstream, not just in the conservative 6th District but in the entire state and country.

Lane says:

I live in the 6th.

What a surprise that PW yanked out the only decent card she has to play (the sympathy one).

As a parent, I truly feel sorry for she and her and her family have gone through. It’s hard to fathom what that would be like to go through

However,

She crossed the line when it became readily apparent that she was groping to just get “ELECTED” no matter where she ran. Political desperation is what I would call it. A very thin veneer.

MB resonates even more strongly with the population in this district than did MKennedy.

Not even close…(but watch how some future MN Poll will call the race as very tight…statistically insignificant difference).

Mark says:

September 18th, 2006 at 10:32 pm

“It took tremendous courage to take on the bureaucracy in D.C., ”

And, after just hearing the ad on the news, what “COURAGE” did it take? I mean, was she afraid for her life or her reputation?

WHat she did was great but not courageous.

Bill says:

Eva Young says:

September 18th, 2006 at 11:15 pm

Mark says:

September 18th, 2006 at 11:17 pm

Her opponent for the Republican endorsement??? WOW.

Howard Miller says:

September 18th, 2006 at 11:18 pm

Its interesting to me that Wetterling wants to protect citizens, and Bachman wants to deny citizens some basic human rights …

i’m glad Ramstad is the local republican in my congressional district (3d) … whether the rep or dem wins, i’ll feel well-represented on many issues … i’m not so sure for our neighbors in the 6th

Mark says:

September 18th, 2006 at 11:24 pm

“Bachman wants to deny citizens some basic human rights … ”

But this view is held by most of the people in MN.

Sam says:

September 19th, 2006 at 1:25 am

Mark says: “And, after just hearing the ad on the news, what “COURAGE” did it take? I mean, was she afraid for her life or her reputation? What she did was great but not courageous.”

I’ve read Eric’s blog many times but never felt the need to submit a comment until now. Especially when someone makes a statement as ludicrous as “was she afraid for her life or her reputation?”

For your information the definition of courage in the Webster dictionary is: “mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty”

When something tragic happens to a child it takes great strength for a mother to even get out of bed in the morning. Let alone try to bring some normalcy to her family’s shredded life. But to go beyond repairing the family and publicly share her story and grief to help others through the legislature shows remarkable courage in what is a very emotionally difficult time. I cannot see how you could call it anything less.

Mark says:

September 19th, 2006 at 1:37 am

Then the word courageous is very much overused.

I have nothing but respect for her activities after her son was taken. It would take a very strong person to carry on. She has accomplished a lot.

But now she is in the political arena. SHe is not to be granted a pass just because of her tragedy, even though it seems that people like you expect us to give her such a pass.

Listen, if it were not for that tragedy she would not be a candidate, and probably would prefer such a life. However, to run on “courage” is an exaggeration and its tiring.

Chip says:

September 19th, 2006 at 6:11 am

I’ve known Patty since before Jacob was abducted. She was a great person back then, too — morally grounded and heavily involved in the community. But I am still in awe of what she’s accomplished since then — she is truly a phenomenal person and her achievements are real and substantial.

As one of the writers posted above, she’s been able to push in a bipartisan manner to get legislation through both houses of Congress.

If that’s all there was to her, that would be enough. But there is more. Her middle-income tax cuts are the only interesting proposals I’ve seen from a member of either party this season. And it pairs the Republicans love of tax cuts with the Democratic agenda of seeing that the middle class finally participates in what the President calls a recovery.

Again, this is an approach meant to span the bipartisan divide, to seek a middle ground.

Her work on child safety can translate over to a heightened effort on homeland security. Who better to work on issues of personal safety, be they ones aimed a child abductors or aimed at the other bad guys?

Even if child safety was her only issue, which I do not think it is by any stretch of the imagination, don’t you think that out of 535 members of Congress, it’s not to much to ask that one of them be the nation’s leader on keeping our kids safe?

I see Michele Bachmann as a single issue person — opposing gay marriage. Everything I see from her is framed by that issue, down to the flyers sent against Wetterling by the RNCC.

We gotta stop sending polarized people to Washington if we ever want a change. There is no more polarizing candidate in Minnesota than Bachmann.

Make a choice for hope. Choose Patty Wetterling.

DJ says:

September 19th, 2006 at 6:21 am

Hurrah for Chip!!

We NEED politicians who are willing to work for the middle class, and who possess our values – - safe homes, well educated children, health care that is effective and reasonably priced.

Who supports MB? The wealthiest of MN-tans. Her fundraiser in Minnetonka is evidence of that. Her maniacal antics while she served in our local legislature were embarassing enough – - can you imagine if she were given a national platfrom from which to spew her venom?

bsimon says:

September 19th, 2006 at 9:45 am

“But this view is held by most of the people in MN. ”

A similar argument was made before the women’s suffrage and civil rights movements. Was it a valid argument then?

Mark says:

September 19th, 2006 at 10:07 am

“A similar argument was made before the women’s suffrage and civil rights movements”

I am not saying that it is valid or invalid. I support gay marriage in at least some form.

However, it is the anti-BAchman people claim that she is out of the mainstream and “spewing venom:. She has maniacal antics that are embarassing. That she is “polarizing”. She is a theocrat. On and on.

But the facts are the opposite. She is mainstream. Her positions are on gay marriage is supported by most Minnesotans and most people across the nation. WHen gay marriage amendments have been before the citizens they have rejected gay marriage in large majorities.

And I like this line: “I see Michele Bachmann as a single issue person”. THis is after the poster goes on and on about Patty Wetterling’s advocacy on child safety and how she shoudl be the child safety representative.

I think in psychology that is called projection. You project you faults onto others. Michelle Bachman is not the single issue person, Patty Wetterling is.

bsimon says:

False and false. The actual vote total was 54%- 46%, which was in the top 5 closest races in the country with an incumbant seeking re-election.

Bush received only 57% of the vote, but Mark calls the 6th “a district a conservative candidate should carry with 60% of the vote.” Why stop at 60%? Why not just make it 70%… it can be like Alabama.

Mark says:

September 19th, 2006 at 2:38 pm

ok…54-46.

In the previous election in 2002 Kennedy got 57% vote versus 35% for the DFL candidate.

Question, if Ellison and Bachman physically ran into each other would it be like a matter/anti-matter collision, poof there would be smoke and sparks and nothing more?

Since Bachmann is going to be just one of 435 members, she is certainly going to have the power all by herself to dismantle public education and throw all the kids into the streets. However, judging from the performance of many public schools, I’m not sure if dismantling public schools is such a bad thing.

mds says:

Another rephrasing for your edification:

“Since Ellison is going to be just one of 435 members, he is certainly going to have the power all by himself to immediately and unilaterally withdraw all our troops from Iraq. However, judging from the incredibly poor occupational planning in Iraq, I’m not sure if immediate unilateral withdrawal is such a bad thing.”

This is a place where open-minded critical thinkers of all political persuasions encounter information and arguments that both support and challenge their preconceptions. The goal is not to eliminate differences but to narrow and clarify them. We begin with a bedrock agreement that the search for insight and clarity is important, serious - and fun.

We ask commenters to be civil and substantive and, if possible, good humored. We reserve the right to delete comments that disregard this request.
